1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Georgia Public Library Service has partnered with public libraries across Georgia to encourage parents to read 1,000 books with their children before enter kindergarten. This program is designed to be a fun and easy way to help your child develop pre-reading skills vital to kindergarten readiness.

Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read. Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success. Public formal education does not typically start until ages 5-6. Before then, parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the 0-5 early critical years. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is a simple and manageable endeavor.

The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is a simple one: Read any book to your child with the goal of reading 1,000 before kindergarten! If you read just 1 book a day, you will have read 365 books in a year. After reading for 2 years, you will have read 730 books. By year 3 you will have read 1,095 books and since most children don't start Kindergarten until 5 or maybe Pre-K at 4 you have plenty of time.

To participate, you will need the Beanstack app. See links below for downloading.
Download the Beanstack app and register yourself as the parent or guardian.
Then you can create a profile for all participating children. This profile will act as their reading log.
Every time you read a book to your child, log the activity on Beanstack.
As your child reaches significant reading milestones (every 100th book) you can come to the library for prizes as incentives for your child's progress.
